Betsy
A. McLane, Ph.D is the co-author with Jack C. Elliis, of A NEW
HISTORY OF DOCUMENTARY from Continuum Books. She is one of the
most the most knowledgeable experts in the field of documentary.
Betsy is a native of Erie, Pennsylvania. With a Ph.D. from the
University of Southern California School of Cinema Television,
she has taught documentary at the university level. As former
Executive Director of the International Documentary Association
she has perhaps seen as many documentaries as anyone in the
field. Dr. McLane retains the title of Director Emerita of IDA.
She was the founding Director of the InFact (formerly DOCtober)
Film Festival. She has written extensively on documentaries, and
was the publisher of International Documentary magazine. Prior
to helming IDA, Dr. McLane was Vice President of Marketing and
Promotion at Direct Cinema Limited, a specialized distribution
company where she oversaw all aspects of acquisition, marketing,
advertising and promotions. She has been a juror at the Sundance
Film Festival, the Hawaii International Film Festival, the AFI
Sony Video Awards, the IDA Awards and DocuDays of Beirut,
Lebanon, and has made formal presentations at the International
Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, the Hot Springs Documentary
Film Festival and the It's All True Documentary Film Festival in
Brazil, among others. Dr. McLane is honored to have served
continuously on the Advisory Board of the National Film Registry
