Wrong Answer

Director- Jon Cohen
Category- Narrative Short
RT-7m 30s

To make money to cover rent, Clare Newell volunteers for a psychology study into the effects of electric shock on recall. Although she doesn't understand what the study is about, all psychobabble really, she is comfortable with doing it. Professor Farley is running the experiment, and the model of the authority figure. He explains to Clare that every time the subject of the study, Holly, gets a question wrong, Clare must give her an electric shock, and keep going til Holly gets the right answer. Clare is a bit uncomfortable with doing this, but as it doesn't appear to be hurting Holly much, she keeps going. With each incorrect answer, Farley asks Clare to raise the power, and with each request, Clare grows more reluctant to do so. Finally, with Holly in considerable pain, Clare refuses to continue. But Farley invokes a higher authority, government, and a fear of terrorism, and afraid of being seen as disloyal, Clare reluctantly continues the study, the electric shocks causing Holly more and more pain. Finally, as Holly gets a question wrong again and again, Clare pushes the power so high that it kills Holly. Shattered, Clare runs from the study. Distraught, Clare sits crying outside the faculty. But she does not know the true nature of the study, a reality shattering and stark in its result. This film is based on the Milgram Obedience Study, conducted in 1968.
