Miles Ahead

Category: Narrative Feature 85mins
Director: Matt Zboyovski
Set against the beautiful and sometimes haunting backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, MILES AHEAD is a visually striking look into the life of a young aspiring writer struggling to overcome the solace of his hometown in the wake of his best friend’s death.
Focusing on the quiet moments in life and the silences between conversations, writers / directors Dylan Trivette and Matt Zboyovski have constructed a film that takes a minimalist approach to the complexities of change.
Through fragmented memories we are introduced to Miles Williams, who is on the cusp of his freshmen year in college. Withdrawn by his mother’s recent death and his distant relationship with his father, Miles has fallen into an insipid routine. He divides his time between his girlfriend, who is soon leaving to attend an out of state college, and his friend Taylor, a happy-go-lucky guy longing to travel on the open road.
Sensing Miles’ growing reliance on the comfort of his surroundings, Taylor convinces him to take a road trip for the weekend. What begins as a journey of self-discovery quickly turns into tragedy when Taylor is killed in a freak car accident along a quiet farm road.
Miles now must overcome the loss of his friend, and face his repressed desire to experience life outside of his surroundings. Struggling to find his way, Miles turns to his father’s forgotten past of old Miles Davis records and books to search for clues to his identity. By accepting Taylor’s fate and his own relationship with his father, Miles is able to come to terms with the hardships of his past and the uncertainty of his future.
