The Passage of Mrs. Calabash

Category: Narrative Short 19 min: 20 sec
Director: Scott Tuft

An overnight train hurtles through the barren winter from Chicago to New England. In a sleeper car, a young gas station proprietress (Katherine Cunningham-Eves), and a retired professor (Charlie Robinson), exchange the guarded secrets that can only be shared with a stranger. As the train enters the station, each bids the other an affectionate farewell. While the professor steps into the desolate night, the girl is left alone to contemplate the mysterious ways a simple train journey can change one's life. No sooner than the two have parted ways are we back on the train, in a reverse telling of the development of their unlikely bond. Peeling back the layers of their relationship, we see their comforts removed, their defenses reassembled and, gradually, their deepest secrets revealed. The passage of Mrs. Calabash, explores the stories of love and loss that these two travel companions share as well as the story of a third passenger, who goes by the name of Mrs. Calabash.
