Samuel DeMango

Category: Narrative Short 13 min : 40 sec
Director Everett Aponte

It began with an idea. How can we combine a zombie with a mango? A delicious tropical fruit; the living dead? Meet Samuel DeMango. An uneducated, melodramatic young man who knows nothing of the universe beyond the plethora of decorative bars that encloses his existence within his home. He can only witness what life passes by as he sits in his front porch. Why doesn't he leave, you ask? He can't. He simply cannot desert his 'loving' mother. This 13-minute narrative presents a troubled young man who would rather die than live with himself knowing that he left his poor old mother alone. Accompanied by his newfound friend and advisor, Mango (or Death), Samuel gains the courage to free himself from the clutches of his evil mother by reattempting suicide. It's within this process where he stumbles upon his true fate and finds the inner strength to balance love and face reality, so to speak. After the first failure, Mango advises him to try other means. Next thing you know, Samuel has neck bruises from the hanging, mutilation from the stabbing, and a big hole in his chest. With Mango's help, the desire to explore the unknown, and the discovery of love, Samuel finds that the only way to escape is to sever the umbilical cord. When Mother warns Sam that he will die in the real world, that he cannot exist without her, he must have the courage to look her in the eye and say, "I'm already dead."
